What I'm Watching: The Shrine

I don't normally judge a movie by it's cover but The Shrine was so strange that I just had to see what in the Sam Hell this movie was all about.  The Shrine is a Canadian horror film (eh?) directed by John Knautz and features some fine young actors: Cindy Sampson, Aaaron Ashmore, Trevor Matthews and Meghan Heffern.  It also has one of the strangest and scariest statue's you'll ever see.  Trust me, you'll want one in your living room.

Due to the massive amount of Netflix movies that are released to streaming lately I end up watching more bad ones than good ones.  Not that I mind at all because there are many bad movies that can be awesome (see Hardware and Night of the Comet).  The mixed reviews on Netflix gave me the feeling that The Shrine was going to be average, at best.  Surprisingly, the movie is very well done and the horror elements are perfectly executed.  The CGI fog was a little laughable but forgivable.

The movie is tense and the pacing is downright perfect, it's exactly what you want in a horror movie.  In many ways it feels more like a classic horror film.  Lately I feel like newer horror movies need to have this complicated, elaborate and twisting plot.  This typically works for a thriller, but not a horror movie.  As Judge Judy would say "Keep it simple, stupid".

There is enough horror and thrills to satisfy you to the end but leaves just a bit of mystery to make you want more without shoving a sequel down your throat.  As in all horror movies you'll be yelling at the protagonists because they will do things that no normal human being would ever do, but you'll be enjoying it the entire time.  If you want a descent scare, be sure to check out The Shrine on Netflix Streaming.

What I’m Watching is a segment about a show, web series, or movie, that I absolutely love, or hate. In every case, the video is streamed through some dazzling technological service.
